The meeting of Experts on Civil Registry “Improving civil status registration systems and combating document fraud”, co-organized by Poland and Burkina Faso, will take place in Warsaw (Poland) from 9 to 11 May, 2011.

The overall objective of this meeting of experts is to address the issue of civil registration and document fraud in an international mobility framework, exchange expertise and best practices, as well as formulate proposals for transnational cooperation which will strengthen the relevant capacities and exchange of information.

Accurate and secure civil registry is crucial to the management of international mobility. Civil registry provides essential citizenship and identity information contained in travel documents, of which authenticity must be secured. Besides its importance in terms of border management, securing the identity of a person is equally important in acquiring access to certain rights pertaining to nationality or a specific status, such as asylum seeker or refugee.

The meeting will be based on four axes:

  • Assessing the situation of civil registry in African and in Europe.
  • Improving civil registration systems and ensuring universal access.
  • Securing documents and fighting document fraud.
  • Facilitating international cooperation among relevant administrations.
